Abstract

Twenty-five years ago the daring purchase of260 acres (105 hectares) began the creation of today's 1076 acre (436 hectares) sole proprietorship, Smith Farms, (Summitville, Indiana). The purpose of this paper is to share the education and experience that have been primary influences in the farm's expansion and profitability. The farm management decisions discussed in this paper include marketing, expense management, investment efficiency, and application of research and technology in crop production. Smith Farms started in December 1971 with the purchase of a very neglected swampy farm. My wife and I lived and taught 120 miles from the farm. We finished the school year and moved to the farm in June 1972. We planted and harvested our first crop in 1972. We took teaching positions in nearby schools in the fall of1972 and continued teaching and farming.
