Abstract

Farming in the UK has evolved as a result of climatic conditions, and the inherent features of the various soil types, mostly laid down in the Ice Ages. Human endeavours over the centuries, influenced by social and economic factors, has provided the patterned agriculture visible today. The physical and financial characteristics of the present farm systems are described, including their capital and labour requirements. The trends in farm profitability is also featured, including the effects of EEC policy. New management issues, largely as a result of the "greening” of the countryside, "natural” foods and human health, are discussed to give a balanced view of current farming conditions and hopes and fears of the future.
