Abstract

The major aim of the research reported in this paper, was to diagnose and to measure the strengths and weaknesses in the staff management system in a farm business, by recording both the employees’ and the employer’s perceptions, given the fact that most employees had a low level of literacy and therefore could not complete the questionnaires themselves. The case study method was used to gather staff management audit data from the employer and 38 farm workers. Strengths and weaknesses in the staff management system were diagnosed, as well as efficient and effective staff management practices on the one hand and inefficient practices on the other hand. On the basis of the results a strategy could be developed with a view to improving productivity and work satisfaction.
