The Outlook and Possible Developments in the European Community

Abstract

The savings carried out in agricultural support by sheer political necessity in many industrialized countries in recent years should provide a favourable setting for the international trade negotiations in agriculture. However, the task of putting offers on the table has in many cases been an agonizing one. This was the case for the EC. Although the EC in the last few years - for budgetary reasons - has been cutting in agricultural support and undoubtedly will have to do so also in the future, the EC offer to the international negotiations is considered insufficient by some of the other negotiating parties. However, the strain put on international agricultural trade and national budgets by agricultural support together with the necessity for market access for Eastern Europe will have to be resolved one way or another.
