New Biotechnical Procedures as Tools in Modern Animal Management

Author

Abstract

Modern farm animal management requires accurate planning of production and its consequent realization. This is based on biological functions as prerequisites for the various forms of farm animal utilization. Biotechnical procedures may be defined as measures for monitoring, controlling, modifying and manipulating biological functions with relevance to animal production. Thus, they may render important contributions to the facilitation of farm animal management. The application of biotechnical procedures and its related problems are discussed for management aspects in the fields of reproduction, meat and milk production as well as animal health and welfare. The perspectives for practical employment of biotechnology are different, but altogether within the framework of realistic application models. Their application however, has to include considerations concerning ecological as well as legislative and ethical principals.
