Abstract

The paper analyses the workings of trade policy in the European Community, it revisits the external dimension of the single European market and discusses broader implications of EC trade policy at various levels. The common European trade policy is shown to largely reflect the development of internal market policies without resulting in a fortress Europe. Efforts by the EC to extend the multilateral trade agenda into new areas are also rooted in the internal market logic but this would do the World Trade Organization a disservice.
