CARACTERIZACION AGRONOMICA DE CULTIVARES DE YUCA (Manihot esculenta Crantz) EN PUERTO RICO

Abstract

During 1989-90, 49 cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) accessions including introductions and local varieties were evaluated for yield and a series of agronomic traits at the Isabela farm of the USDA-ARS, Tropical Agriculture Research Station. Accessions with outstanding yield were: Venezolana, Llanera, PI 12903, PI 9581, SD2, and Mc 22 with yields of 24.0, 21.3, 20.7, 20.0, 18.7, and 17.3 t/ha, respectively. Accessions with outstanding dry matter content (over 30%) and their culinary quality were also identified. Most of the accessions had a harvest index of less that 50% except accession MC 22 (52%). Results suggest that cassava production in Puerto Rico could increase if farmers adopt superior cultivars.
