ON FARM EVALUATION OF FIVE TOMATO CULTIVARS (Lycopersicon esculentum) FOR YIELD AND FUSARIUM WILT (Fusarium oxysporum f. lycopersici), TOLERANCE IN ST. LUCIA

Abstract

Five tomato cultivars (Calypso, Walter, Indian River, Floradade and Caraibe) were evaluated for yield and tolerance to fusarium wilt in two agro-eoclogical zones in St. Lucia. The trials were conducted on farmers' holdings in 1984 during the dry (January-May) and wet (July-December) cropping seasons. Cultivars with 0.9 per cent of total plant population affected by the disease were designated as tolerant; those with 10-20 per cent, moderately tolerant; those with 21-49 per cent, susceptible; and those with more than 507., highly susceptible. In the dry cropping season, Caraibe and Calypso were both moderately tolerant to the disease; Walter, susceptible and Indian River and Floradade, highly susceptible. In the wet cropping season Caraibe was moderately tolerant while Calypso, Walter, Floradade and Indian River were all highly susceptible. Caraibe produced an average yield of 31 tonnes ha-l in the dry cropping season and 10 tonnes ha- l in the wet season.
