Abstract

----- During the last years, cocoyam crops have acquired more importance in Costa Rica. The species used are white cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium Schott) and purple cocoyam (Xanthosoma violaceum). In the production areas two diseases have been detected. Bacterial Spot: caused by Xanthomonas campestris p.v. aracearum (Berniac) Dye. Symptoms were shown as abundant small clorotic spots that can cover all of the foliar area. This disease is present only in the Atlantic Zone (Limôn), and in some places an incidence of almost 90% has been observed. Bacterial Necrotic Margin: caused by Xanthomonas campestris (Pammel) Dowson. The infection starts like a necrosis on the edge of the leaves, and it continues to the interior of them. It can keep necrosising the nervures and later the petioles. This disease is spread in all the areas of Costa Rica that grow cocoyam. Morfological, physiological, and pathogenic testings were made in both diseases for their identification.
