Abstract

To determine the competitive effect of different population densities of junglerice (Echinochloa colonum (L.) Link.) on the yield of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam), four experiments were conducted at the Isabela and Juana Diaz Research and Development Centers during 1981 and 1982. At both localities each experimental plot consisted of four rows 6.1 m long and 1.22 m apart. Miguela cultivar vines were planted on top of the ridge. During 1981, sweet potatoes yield was not affected significantly by junglerice competition at a population density of 10 plants per square meter at Isabela. In the same year, when sweet potatoes were growing with jungle-rice population densities ranging from 21 to 42 plants/m2 at Isabela, and 17 to 68 plants/m2 at Juana Diaz, the yields were reduced drastically. During 1982, sweet potatoes yields were not reduced significantly by the lower junglerice densities (1.4, 3.0 and 6.0 plants/m2 at Isabela, 5.0 and 9.0 plants/m2 at Juana Diaz). Junglerice population densities of 18 and 37 plants/m2 at Juana Diaz, reduced sweet potatoes yield during 1982.
