Portugal'S Entry Into The Ec: The Challenge For Small Farmers

Abstract

Portuguese farmers face product price declines of 15 to 30 percent because of the country's entrance into the European Economic Community (EC). Simulations suggest that technological changes can compensate for price declines on large farms. Medium farms may suffer because they cannot achieve sufficient scale nor cannot earn enough off-farm income.
