Exigences de Fonds Propres Reglementaires et Comportement a Risque : Preuves du Systa¨me Bancaire du Malawi

Abstract

Les partisans d'une reglementation stricte plaident en faveur d'exigences plus elevees en matia¨re de fonds propres, car elles favoriseraient la stabilite financia¨re. Les opposants aux exigences de capital plus elevees soutiennent que les ra¨gles d'adequation du capital pourraient ne pas ameliorer la stabilite, mais pourraient en fait augmenter le risque d'une banque. L'article teste cette hypotha¨se a l'aide d'un moda¨le dynamique de donnees de panel pour huit banques commerciales du Malawi. Les resultats reva¨lent qu'il existe une forte persistance dans le comportement a risque des banques malawites. En outre, l'etude montre que des ratios de capital eleves reduisent le comportement de prise de risque des banques du Malawi par la reduction du ratio des praªts non performants (PNP) et l'investissement dans des actifs a haut risque. Sur la base de ces resultats, l'imposition de sanctions seva¨res aux banques qui ne respectent pas les exigences minimales de fonds propres et l'application stricte de la reglementation sont essentielles pour garantir que toutes les banques maintiennent des reserves de capital suffisantes et preservent ainsi la stabilite du systa¨me bancaire.
