Abstract

Internationale Bemühungen um die Bewältigung der ivorischen und liberianischen Krisen und deren militärische, politische und ökonomische Auswirkungen prägten die Entwicklung Westafrikas im Berichtsjahr. Die wachsende geostrategische Bedeutung der Krisenregion zeigte sich auch in der verstärkten Aufmerksamkeit, die der UN-Sicherheitsrat sowie die Weltmächte dieser Region zollten. US Präsident George W. Bush besuchte im Rahmen seiner Afrikareise Anfang Juli Senegal und Nigeria, der französische Präsident Jacques Chirac Ende Oktober Niger und Mali.
