Abstract

Bei den Kommunal- und Parlamentswahlen konnte die Regierungskoalition ihre Mehrheit ausbauen. Eine Affäre um eine grenzüberschreitende Schmugglerbande ließ eine zuneh-mende Kriminalisierung und Korruption des politischen Lebens befürchten, die auch die außenpolitischen Beziehungen zu den Nachbarstaaten belastete. Die kleinbäuerlichen Baumwollproduzenten litten unter der Umstrukturierung des Sektors und fallenden Weltmarktpreisen.
