Abstract

Die angekündigten Präsidentschaftswahlen 2001 führten zum Kampf um günstige Start-positionen der Kontrahenten um die politische Macht im Staate, der mit harten Bandagen geführt wurde. Putsch- und Attentatsvorwürfe seitens Regierung und Opposition sowie Bestechung von Parlamentariern heizten das politische Klima auf. Die Verlegung des AKP-Gipfels von Lomé nach Cotonou im Juni brachte erhebliches außenpolitisches Pres-tige auf Kosten des togoischen Nachbarn. Die Wirtschaftsentwicklung stand unter positi-ven Vorzeichen.
