Abstract

Der Demokratisierungsprozeß in Benin wurde durch die Parlaments- und Staatspräsidentenwahlen konsolidiert. Die Legitimität der neuen Regierung wird - angesichts der andauernden wirtschaftlichen Misere - aber bereits durch eine anwachsende Unzufriedenheit der Bevölkerung und neu auflebende Streikbewegung in Frage gestellt. Die internationale Gebergemeinschaft honoriert den als beispielhaft angesehenen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Liberalisierungsprozeß mit massiven Hilfezusagen. Die staatliche Verwaltung und Wirtschaft kann vorläufig nur dank der ausländischen Hilfe überleben. Parallelmarkt und informeller Sektor sind für viele Beniner heute die einzige Chance zur Überlebenssicherung.
