Abstract

Die Entwicklung in Togo im Jahre 1990 war gekennzeichnet durch die kontroverse Diskussion über die Demokratisierung und Liberalisierung von Politik und Wirtschaft. Das Beispiel des "renouveau démocratique" im Nachbarland Benin, aber auch in anderen Staaten des frankophonen Afrika - von den machthabenden Despoten gefürchtet, von der Bevölkerung herbeigesehnt -, brachte auch die Machtbasis Eyadémas ins Wanken. Der kurze Wirtschaftsboom der vergangenen zwei Jahre erwies sich als Strohfeuer. Die Phosphat-Produktion, der bei weitem wichtigste Devisenbringer des Landes, ging aufgrund mangelnder Nachfrage bei niedrigeren Preisen zurück. Die landwirtschaftliche Produktion lieferte schlechtere Ergebnisse als erwartet.
