Mitteldeutschland - Regionalbegriff und Handlungsraum

Abstract

"Mitteldeutschland" als Raumbegriff stellt heute eine länderübergreifende Region im südlichen Ostdeutschland dar. Vor etwa 100 Jahren wurde der damals lageorientierte Planungsraum "Mitteldeutscher Industriebezirk" so bestimmt; er zählte u.a. mit anderen Verwaltungs- und Entwicklungsregionen in Deutschland, wie dem "Siedlungsverband Ruhrkohlenbezirk", "Groß-Berlin" und Schlesien, zu den ersten erfolgreichen Unternehmungen der damals noch jungen, integrierenden und funktionsbezogenen Raumplanung. In anderen raumforschenden Disziplinen, u.a. der Geografie und der Linguistik, wurde das Areal aus jeweiligem Sachbezug schon seit Langem so bestimmt. Nunmehr schickt man sich seit Längerem an, in der "Europäischen Metropolregion Mitteldeutschland", im Agglomerationsraum um die Großstädte Halle (Saale) und Leipzig, interkommunale Kooperation der Raumentwicklung zur Daseinsvorsorge und zum Wohle der Bevölkerung zu betreiben.
