Abstract

Every day, the change in the President became more obvious. Ironically, it had been the sweeping Republican triumph in the congressional elections that had given Harry Truman a new lease on life. At last, he was free from the shadow of Franklin Roosevelt. Charlie Ross told White House reporters, “The real Truman administration began the day after the elections.” The President was now a free man and could write a fine record. Henceforth, Harry Truman would be guided by the simple idea that he would be for the welfare of all the people without regard to political considerations…
