Open Public Sector Information in Australia

In: Digital Innovation Harnessing the Value of Open Data

Abstract

The most significant changes effecting public access to public sector information and data in Australia during this century have not been made through copyright law reform but through changes in copyright practice. The changes brought about by licensing reflect the changes brought world-wide by the open content movement. It is important for the future of Australian reform that copyright law and policy are consistent with, and not a barrier to, access to public sector information and data if the goals of accountability of government, better communication and interaction with the community and net benefits to the economy and society are to be promoted.
