Abstract

This paper considers an optimal inspection policy for a two-unit system which is checked periodically with two types of inspections: Type-1 inspection has the loss cost which is lower than that of type-2 inspection. However, type-1 inspection is impossible to replace failed unit with a new one. On the other hand, type-2 inspection can replace failed unit with a new one. However, its loss cost is higher than that of type-1 inspection. Therefore, type-1 inspection checks the system so frequently more than type-2 inspection. We consider the time from the beginning of system operation to the replacement of a failed system. Then, the mean time and the expected cost per unit of time are derived analytically. Further, numerical examples are given when the failure time distributions are exponential.
