Corporate Governance in Shreni System: Glimpses from Ancient India

Abstract

Ancient India had several ways of governing exchange, such as gana, pani, puga, vrata, sangha, nigama, and Shreni, in addition to family- and privately-owned companies. The terms nigama, pani, and shreni are most frequently used to describe commercial associations of traders, artisans, and potentially even paramilitary organizations. The aim of this chapter is to elaborate on the distinct characteristics of corporate governance in ancient India, especially highlighting the Shreni system, which resembles the modern corporate.
