Abstract

This chapter shifts from the larger “systems” perspective to a focus on healthcare delivery, the programs which focus on specific services, and the beneficiaries of those programs. Data, however well collated, cleverly analyzed, and thoughtfully interpreted, can only provide a skeleton on which to hang our understanding of private healthcare delivery in low- and middle-income countries: how the private sector is viewed by clients; what it means for providers, both those working full time in the private sector and those employed both in the public and private sectors; and how governments and international development agencies think about and react to the private sector.This chapter provides an introduction to the views and priorities of patients in selecting care for themselves or their loved ones, what factors matter, and when and how real people deal with difficult choices.
