Abstract

Industry 4.0 can play a significant role in unlocking the manufacturing potential, increasing efficiency, and enhancing the industrial competitiveness of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Foreign Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) are increasingly playing an important role in the development of the Industry 4.0 ecosystem in the ASEAN region, involving a wide spectrum of technology applications (from automation, additive manufacturing (AM) to Industrial Internet of Things and smart factories). Many MNEs are also investing in the region to build digital infrastructure, manufacture industrial automation (IA) hardware, and operate close to clients in the region’s vibrant manufacturing industry. This chapter analyses Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and MNEs in Industry 4.0 in ASEAN. In particular, it examines the role of MNEs in Industry 4.0 transformation through adoption and provision of technology solutions. In conclusion, this chapter highlights the significance of improving the investment environment by establishing relevant policies to incentivize the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies for Industry 4.0 transformation.
