Abstract

Well, I would say that I have learnt some hard truths. In diplomacy, I have learnt that the most important factor in international relations is power. Those who have power tend to be able to get their way. If there’s a clash between power and principle, in theory, principle should be stronger and values should prevail. Yet power always trumps principle. Clearly, this is something that’s quite surprising to the man in the street. People are often very surprised to learn that, at the end of the day, what really matters is power in international relations. In the case of academia, of course, I’ve learnt something quite different. It’s about the power of ideas. If you have a good idea, even if you come from a small country, university or organisation, you can still have an impact. So broadly, these would be my main takeaways from my time in diplomacy and academia.…
