Foreign Trade in the Song Dynasty

Abstract

With the rapid development of ethnic minorities in northern China, during the Southern and Northern Song Dynasties, severe conflicts arose between the Song government and minorities as well as between minorities themselves. National conflicts and struggles were complicated and intense. During the Northern Song Dynasty, the Central Plains of China were relatively unified, with the north under the rule of the Liao, the Tangut, the Jin and other minorities, which blocked the outbound continental route, discontinuing Silk Road trade. The Song Dynasty retreated to the south as the Southern Song regime. Conflicts between Song and Jin, Song with the Jin and Mongolia still existed, leading to a gradual decline of northwest Silk Road trade as well.…
