Abstract

Few things drive us as much as the need to belong. Belongingness is increasingly a challenge for people in modern urban environs – a complete contradiction to the hyperconnected world at our disposal. A plausible reason for this is our overreliance on an economic system celebrating competition as a cornerstone of economic health and value creation. Neighbourly relations, communities, and any of the social circles that fulfil our desire to belong also thrive on the absence of direct competition. Few modern cities operate on mutual human support. Residents compete for apartments, jobs, partners, and their chance to be lonely at the top. It would appear that loneliness and mental illness are particularly prevalent amongst big city dwellers – which is incongruent to their surroundings, living amidst masses of people, resources, and infrastructure. Perhaps city-dwellers accept the endless competition across all aspects of life as a trade-off for the amenities of the urban jungles…
