Insurance Awareness and Education

In: Health Microinsurance Implementing Universal Health Coverage in the Informal Sector

Abstract

The concept of insurance is novel to the target community of microinsurance, and therefore, the success of a community-based health insurance (CBHI) scheme largely rests on the understanding and acceptance of insurance by the population. The objective of this chapter is to focus on the activities involved in creating insurance awareness and education among the mostly illiterate and innumerate members of the community. Three core issues are identified to discuss an understanding of the value proposition of insurance, the business process of CBHI, and the role of the community in this enterprise.
