Abstract

In this chapter we will present new insights that have emerged from a multiple case survey study among innovating small and medium sized enterprises. Innovation is studied in terms of a cycling race and the basic question discussed is what differentiates the "front runners" (successfully innovating firms) from the "members of the pack" (firms with an average success performance in their innovative efforts). A unique characteristic of this study is that the lessons presented are non-sector-specific. 63 companies from 35 different manufacturing and service sectors have been studied in-depth employing a matched sample methodology. The main findings have been published in Cobbenhagen (2000). In this chapter we will elaborate on the new leads for research which emerged from the study. It will be argued that frontrunners are driven by an internal locus of control, whereas pack members are more likely to have an external locus of control.
