Abstract

The myth of economic globalization increasing environmental standards in developing countries by making the countries wealthier has its grain of truth. What is a developing country? It is “a poor agricultural country that is seeking to become more advanced economically and socially” (Wikipedia). It is also called less-developed or under-developed country. Who decides? United Nations. How is it measured? Developing countries have a less-developed industrial base. Traditionally “developing country” was decided by calculating economic development (national income, GDP, or GNP) only. More recently the “Human Development Index” (HDI) was created, and also adjusted for Inequality HDI (IHDI) (see Figure 1). “The HDI simplifies and captures only part of what human development entails. It does not reflect on inequalities, poverty, human security, empowerment, etc.” (UN Development Programme). HDI attempts to measures “a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living” (Ibid.)…
