Abstract

Organizational practices provide the foundation of product development systems in large-scale enterprises. Organization is composed of eight subsets of practice that are profiled and grounded in case examples. Means are compared with the Best-in-Class standards as well as the lowest scores recorded in the SPOT II databank. Correlations with overall performance in Appendix Table 5 enable readers to benchmark their enterprises against BIC standards to prioritize for improving organization effectiveness. Insert the percentage of time your enterprises deploys 10 key practice to calculate Big Bangs to identify high leverage opportunities for improving performance. The cornerstone of concurrent organization design is early simultaneous influence (ESI), a critical practice for cost-effective innovation. The impact of ESI on performance is even greater in enterprises targeting radically new product developments. Excerpts from case studies illustrate the effectiveness of organization practices for improving operations for product development. For example, a division of Lockheed-Martin provides an exemplary case example of transformation to concurrent product development (CPD) by empowering cross-functional teams with charters specifying mission and resources for execution from the outset.
