Abstract

This chapter consists of sections on Introduction, Historical Overview, The Environment for Entrepreneurship and Toward the Future. Introduction, as follows:The westernmost country of Europe, the Republic of Iceland covers 103,000 square kilometres, including the largest volcanic island in the world. Iceland’s landscape includes fumaroles emitting hot steam (Exhibit 10.1) and geysers (Exhibit 10.2), as well as snow-capped volcanoes (Exhibit 10.3). Subterranean hot water is used to heat fish hatcheries, greenhouses, homes, and swimming pools. Its capital, Reykjavík (Exhibit 10.4), is the northern-most capital of any nation.Hansson et al. reported, “One out of every nine Icelanders at the age 18–64 is entrepreneurially active, or 11.3% of the population; this places Iceland in tenth place of all the GEM nations. No European country has a higher rate than Iceland … Very few start companies out of necessity” (2002, p. 8)…
