Abstract

This chapter consists of sections on Introduction, Historical Overview, The Environment for Entrepreneurship and Toward the Future. Introduction, as follows:Physically an enclave at the southern tip of Spain, Gibraltar (Exhibit 9.1) is a British Overseas Territory, only 32 kilometres from Africa, and overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar — the direct sea-route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Its area is 6.7 square kilometres including reclaimed land; some of its housing on the west side and also a portion of its airport (Exhibit 9.2) runway is on reclaimed land.Gibraltar has a multicultural society, with Catholic and Protestant churches, synagogues, a Hindu temple and a mosque. Haller wrote, “Gibraltarians speak English, Spanish and a mixture of both, and/or a local idiom Yanito, spiced with many Hebrew and Genoese words. Ethnically, they are of British, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Moroccan, Maltese, Indian, and Jewish origin” (2003, p. 77). Government policy is supportive of entrepreneurship. In the absence of springs, rivers, agriculture, and other resources, policy has been among this duty-free port’s most important assets…
