Abstract

This chapter discusses key characteristics of the US after 2000, based on its role as the leader of the capitalist world since 1945. The US was then the world’s largest economy and had changed political direction from pre-World War II isolationism to the role of global policeman. Part of this global leadership role was implemented by dominating the two main financial institutions in the newly established ‘development’ sector, the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), collectively known as the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) and named after the American location where they were established…
