Abstract

In this volume, the authors have turned their attentions to the descriptive and normative theories of microfinance as well as providing some empirical evidence with which to examine their characteristics. As we have seen, much of the extant research has focused on the purpose, structure, and effectiveness of microfinance institutions (mFIs) in poverty alleviation. Less has been discussed about mFIs as for-profit businesses but, as it turns out from the empirical evidence in this volume, they are subject to the same types of risks (macroeconomic, organization, and product mix) as other financial institutions, and with greater volatility…
