Abstract

Our planet is like a system with limited resource and with an increased pressure of population growth requirements. In this created turbulent conditions, has emerged the need for a new development model of the social-economic and environment system which takes into account the limits imposed by nature itself. The future development have to take into consideration the sustainable development principles and values. Generally, each aspect concerning the system has to be design and exploited around the sustainable development: the society development takes into consideration the implications of sustainable strategies, education should become sustainable, industry or agriculture are developed in sustainable ways, research should sustain sustainable development, and resources should be used in a sustainable manner. Sustainability principles and values implications should support a model of the human society development which assures the “welfare of today’s generations without compromising the chances for future generations”. The purpose of this research is to analyze the state of sustainability in Romania, at regional level and to establish the steps that must be followed in order to achieve sustainable development. The research methodology used in achieving the aim, consists of two important steps: (1) the design and development of a database with a consistent number of indicators (over 20 indicators of sustainable development were used in our research); (2) these indicators will be collected and grouped according to the three pillars of sustainable development: economy, environment and society. These indicators are the basis of a modeling analysis (and defining a global index) considers the Sustainability Dashboard Software. The proposed approach for diagnosis the sustainable development state has a high relevance for the future regional development (in the case of a country). According to the score obtained at the regional level, there could be identified the next steps that have to be followed in order to achieve a higher level of sustainability. These approach can also, support the regional development strategy for sustainable development.
