Abstract

Nowadays, the relation between car transport and climate change is according to recent surveys obvious to most people in Europe. Despite this cognition the necessary behavioural change only proceeds slowly. Hence, the significance of innovative technologies reducing CO2 emissions from cars rises as behavioural change may take longer and remains uncertain. This paper focuses on technically feasible CO2 emission reduction potentials of prospective car technologies, their maturity and compatibility. Therefore, a technology journal review, expert and stakeholder interviews results have been carried out resulting in a long list of potential technologies to reduce CO2 emissions of road passenger transport. Technologies that improve fuel efficiency of fossil fuel cars are analyzed as well as impacts of CNG, LPG and battery electric vehicles.
