Abstract

This chapter presents the developmental work related to application of risk-based/risk-informed methodology to various aspects of design and operation of complex safety-critical engineering systems by discussing case studies on nuclear power plants (NPPs). There are efforts at the international level to identify areas for integrated risk management during design, operations, and regulation as part of the strategies for competitive NPPs [1]. The objectives, motivation, approach/methodology, and conclusions for each case study are discussed. Some of these applications have been used in support of regulation while others have been performed as part of R&D work to address real-time conditions. Section 15.2 deals with discussion on the general areas of PRA/risk-based applications and Section 15.3 presents the experience on development of risk-based/risk-informed applications through specific case studies. Out of seven case studies, six deals with demonstration of risk-based approach to nuclear plant, and one case study deals with aging assessment of an irradiator plant. The point being made here is that the risk-based approach can suitably be adapted for other areas, such as process and chemical plants, aviation and space, and rail and transport.
