Abstract

This chapter aims to explain how to move from classical binary systems (i.e. with only two states) to multistate systems (e.g. production systems) and to move from the classical safety approach to the functional safety approach and safety integrity levels (SIL) according to IEC 61508 (2010). It is an introduction to Chap. 35 devoted to production availability calculations and to Chap. 36 devoted to functional safety calculations where these topics are developed in more detail. It also aims to provide an overview of the various probability calculation techniques described in this book: e.g. Boolean (fault tree, FT, reliability block diagram, RBD, event tree, ET), Markovian, Petri nets and Monte Carlo approaches and combination between them (e.g. FT-driven Markov models or RBD-driven Petri nets models).
