Abstract

Policies and procedures exist to ensure that an organization’s employees fully understand and comply with the operational and behavioral expectations of their organization. Properly understanding their organization’s expectations for its employees, enables individual employees to successfully enact their roles and responsibilities in accordance with these expectations. Policies and procedures provide essential guidance that informs how employees approach and perform their work on behalf of their organization. While policies provide general guidance for decision making, procedures support policies by providing specific direction for enacting one’s roles and responsibilities. Policies are therefore “guides for decision making”, while procedures are “guides for action”. The successful development and implementation of policies and procedures involves ensuring that all policies and procedures are relevant and current. It is imperative that all policies and procedures be properly communicated to an organization’s employees.
