Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of India’s domestic energy profileEnergy profile within the framework of domestic energy policyEnergy policy. Energy securityEnergy security has remained a significant concern for India ever since the implementation of Liberalization-Privatization-Globalization (LPG) and structural economic reforms in the 1990s. According to Diwan (Energy Security. Pentagon Energy Press, 2009), the reforms implemented in the 1990s resulted in a shift in energy consumptionEnergy consumption patterns, transitioning from non-commercial energy sources to commercial energy sources. This transformation was driven by the increasing living standards of the population (p. 92). Hence, energy securityEnergy security has assumed a prominent role in India’s policy formulation during the twenty-first century. India, with a population above 1.2 billion, occupies the second position among the most populous nations globally.
