Abstract

Why did Korea develop a larger cultural wave than other developing countries doing the same in the same period from the 1980s through the 1990s? First, it is argued that Korea could create a global Korean Wave, instead of remain a regional cultural wave like all other regional cultural waves of all other non-Western developing countries, because of a great deal of Korea’s greater likelihood of domestic economic synergies and global economic synergies that it has as its disposal. Four main kinds of synergies are described that rarely coordinate in one country’s political economy. Additional miscellaneous synergies are mentioned as well, beyond the main four.
