Future of Digital Entrepreneurship: The Expanded Role of Government in the Entrepreneurial Event Model

The digital age has brought unprecedented opportunities for entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. However, university students in emerging countries may face unique challenges and barriers in realizing their potential in this digital space. The study aims to identify the factors that impact students’ entrepreneurial intentions, perceptions, and attitudes toward digital entrepreneurship. The study employs a quantitative methodology, gathering data from 334 Vietnamese university students through convenience sampling, an online survey comprised of demographic and Likert scale questions. The questionnaire, subjected to rigorous pre-testing and expert validation, ensures the reliability of the findings. Data analysis utilizes Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine the constructs and their interrelationships. Extending the Entrepreneurial Event Model with government support and self-efficacy, this research shows that university students in emerging countries have a positive attitude toward digital entrepreneurship and a high entrepreneurial intention. The study found that government support is a vital resource that positively affects self-efficacy and digital entrepreneurial intention. This study contributes to the literature on digital entrepreneurship by highlighting the factors driving digital entrepreneurial intention. Policymakers, educators, and practitioners can use the findings to promote digital entrepreneurship in emerging countries. Future research must explore practical educational approaches and investigate the factors influencing behavior.
