Abstract

In light of the pioneering direction established by Bitcoin, what are the various development paths virtual currencies are taking? Which currencies are deepening the innovative concepts of Bitcoin, and which ones are charting new territories by reversing its course? How do these differing approaches impact the stability, adoption and technological progress of virtual currencies in the context of the broader financial ecosystem? In this Chapter, we analyze the divergent paths that virtual currencies have taken since the inception of Bitcoin. We discuss those that have traced the revolutionary footsteps of Bitcoin, followed by others that have chosen to explore the opposite direction, suggesting a spectrum of advancement and innovation in the realm of digital currency. This heralds a focus on the dynamic nature of cryptocurrency evolution, including both improvements to and alternative explorations of the original Bitcoin concept.
