Abstract

This book chapter delves into the transformative power of digital technologies on society and the concomitant challenges that this shift engenders, particularly on governance and sustainability as well as on taxation. Initially, the chapter provides an overview of digital transformation, its driving forces, its benefits, and the potential pitfalls in its adoption. The ensuing discussions illuminate the pivotal role of digital technologies in various industries, elucidating how they stimulate innovation, boost productivity, and revolutionize customer experiences through pertinent examples. The subsequent section of the chapter meticulously explores the multifaceted challenges linked to governance, sustainability, and taxation that arise with the ongoing digital transformation. It investigates the issues of data privacy and security, ethical dilemmas in the use of technology, the digital divide, energy consumption, e-waste, and urban planning in smart cities. The chapter also demystifies taxation difficulties in the digital era, focusing on digital goods and services, multinational digital corporations, and the impact of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. The chapter underscores the importance of developing responsible and equitable solutions by emphasizing the necessity of a cooperative effort involving governments, businesses, individuals, and international organizations.
