Abstract

Smallholding farming contributes immensely to agricultural practices globally. The poultry industry in Nigeria has welcomed such farmers, especially in Ibadan, which is perceived as Nigeria's poultry capital but needs more literature. This study sought data on the prospects and challenges associated with smallholding poultry farmers’ livelihood and performance improvement in Ibadan. Six respondents were sampled through phenomenological qualitative methods. The results of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) disclosed that respondents’ livelihood and performance improvement were aided by the sale of poultry wastes, education of members and business funding sources of respondents. Conversely, the challenges include staff theft, staff turnover, location instability and high poultry inputs and production costs. Recommendations were made to stakeholders to increase respondents’ livelihood and performance improvement.
