Abstract

This chapter examines the economic and social structures of medieval commercial society, leading up to the Industrial Revolution. It focuses on the transformation from feudal to capitalist systems, highlighting the development of towns, the emergence of capital through trade, especially involving the Jewish and Christian merchants, and the formation of the early capitalist economy characterized by joint stock companies and maritime trade. The narrative explores the evolution of economic mutual trust, the rise of citizen economies, and the pivotal role of mutual aid in pre-industrial European commerce. Through a detailed historical analysis, the chapter discusses how these economic changes influenced social structures, leading to the rise of a more dynamic, interconnected, and commercially robust society. This transformation set the stage for the later industrial changes and had a profound impact on the development of modern economic systems.
