Abstract

Efficient health systems are essential for delivering quality care while optimizing resource use. Policymakers worldwide prioritize health system efficiency as they strive for universal health coverage, especially given the challenges posed by aging populations. Achieving efficiency involves balancing cost-effectiveness, quality, and patient well-being. Evaluating health systems goes beyond mortality and morbidity indicators, considering factors like access, coverage, and quality of care. These assessments guide policy decisions to enhance overall health system performance. Context matters, and interpreting indicators within specific health systems is crucial. Efficiency measurement demonstrates good stewardship by eliminating wastage and making effective use of available resources. Metrics and evaluation serve multiple purposes, from sustaining interest in global health to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and promoting transparency and accountability.
