Abstract
Research and development (R&D) in healthcare refers to the systematic effort to develop new medical treatments, technologies, and processes to improve patient care and health outcomes. This includes clinical trials for new drugs, the creation of medical devices, and innovations in health informatics. R&D is essential for advancing medical knowledge, reducing healthcare costs, and enhancing the efficacy of treatments. Health research plays a crucial role in advancing the sustainable development goals. However, it faces several challenges, such as securing funding, capacity-building, generating meaningful research findings, leveraging both local and global evidence, and minimizing waste. The age of the insular R&D organization is over. To serve as a company’s innovation engine, R&D strategy needs to be equipped for today’s fast-moving world. The global investment in R&D is staggering nearly 2% of global GDP. Annual investment has been growing at approximately 4% per year over the past decade. Recent R&D efforts have struggled to provide widespread life-altering results. A sustainability pathway model to achieving economically viable sustainable innovation system is desirable. R&D investments yield the critical technology from which they can develop new products, services, and business models. Its role must be woven centrally into the organization’s mission. Research and development (R&D) should contribute to executing and shaping corporate strategy. It involves creating unique products or services for priority markets, exploring strategic alternatives, and identifying innovative pathways for business transformation. The R&D strategy should align board-level priorities with the organization’s technological focus, emphasizing what needs to be delivered and how it will be achieved. Crafting an R&D strategy involves distinct challenges compared to other functions. A well-defined R&D strategy, aligned with the corporate vision, is crucial for optimizing innovation investments and enhancing long-term company value. Applied research and development aims to gather sufficient information using studies with appropriate methodological rigor. The goal is to enhance practice promptly by identifying effective approaches and providing guidance on their implementation. The research and development (R&D) program provides the foundation for soundly based clinical and managerial practice, bringing to healthcare a fresh approach that is stimulating and challenging.
