Abstract
Quality management in health care has observed a paradigm shift from expecting errors and defects to considering that perfect patient experience is achievable. The system for causing quality is prevention and not the appraisal. Quality of health services is critical for reducing cost, variations, and waste in healthcare systems. Total quality management (TQM) in healthcare is a management approach focused on continuously improving the quality of patient care and operational efficiency. It involves the participation of all members of the organization, aiming to enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes through systematic process improvements, data-driven decision-making, and fostering a culture of quality among employees. TQM principles include customer focus, process orientation, continuous improvement, and employee involvement. The key principles of TQM are customer focus, obsession with quality, scientific approach, long-term commitment, teamwork, continual improvement systems, education, and training, freedom through control, and unity. TQM has become an important management approach for advancing effectiveness in the health-care sector. Top-management commitment, teamwork and participation, process management, customer focus and satisfaction, resource management, organization behavior and culture, continuous improvement, and training and education are considered as best practices for TQM implementation in any health care setting. The proper function of a healthcare organization requires the formulation of a competitive framework that responds to basic parameters related to strategic issues, organizational models, and processes. International competition and rapid scientific and technological developments force the management of these organizations to adapt to environmental influences. It is crucial that modern hospitals strive to maximize levels of efficiency and effectiveness while minimizing the cost. Total quality management (TQM) in healthcare emphasizes continual improvement and patient-centered care. Key TQM principles include: Continuous quality improvement (CQI): TQM focuses on ongoing enhancement of processes, services, and outcomes. Organizations systematically identify areas for improvement; Customer focus: TQM prioritizes patients as ultimate customers, aiming to meet their needs and enhance satisfaction; Teamwork: Collaboration among healthcare providers is essential. TQM encourages interdisciplinary teams to work together and drive positive change. TQM promotes accuracy, efficiency, and reliability while fostering a culture of quality and excellence. Adopting TQM principles enhances patient outcomes and overall performance.
